The Clouds Would Have Looked Much the Same

Church built in Neuenburg, Mexico Campo21
Neuenburg Campo 21, Mexico. Painting by Henry Pauls, 1993

If you had been lying stretched out in the grass growing beside the Leamington church in 1933, the clouds would have looked much the same as they did in Neuenburg, Ukraine, a hundred years earlier, or as they did in 1921, when the church in Mexico was being built.

After looking at the clouds, you might have peeked through one of the six windows of the church and read the following words written on a wall hanging: Himmel Und Erde Werden Vergehen Aber Meine Worte Werden Nicht Vergehen (Heaven And Earth Shall Vanish But My Words Will Not Vanish).

Everything has disappeared since: the 1930 cars, the horses and their owners, the two churches, and possibly even you. The Leamington church was rebuilt in 1984 and the two verses above were chiseled into a concrete wall behind the pulpit. Windows were installed all around the sanctuary and even behind the pulpit. One can now look through a row of glass panes at a cat that might appear on the ledge, one paw stopped in mid-air while the cat gazes at us in apparent wonderment, and we at it. We see branches stirring in the breeze and clouds in the sky.
