Mennonites like to be involved in charitable activities, like those of the Gleaners located on Industrial Road in Leamington (http://swogleaners.org).
The picture below shows Amy Pinsoneault, far left, Wern Toews. Center, and Kiana Epp, far right. Amy is the welcoming receptionist who will offer you a cup of coffee when you drop in to visit. Wern is the present chair person of the Gleaner’s Board. Kiana is a student of UMEI (United Mennonite Educational Institute) who recently took part in the school’s ‘fastathon’. She herself raised $2020 for The Gleaners. She is shown in the picture below together with Amy holding the cheque.
Kiana said that, surprisingly, the 30 hour fast did not make her stomach growl as much as she thought it would. She fasted from 12 noon on Jan. 26 till 6:00 pm on Jan 27. During this time she drank only a bit of juice. Kiana said that the hardest time for her was in the morning, giving up breakfast and, missing the ‘down time’ at Tim Horton’s. During her time of fasting time she sold 35 ‘fasters’ as she called them, who together donated the money for the cheque.
When asked why she had engaged in the fasting project Kiana said that she wanted to do something that would make a difference for others.
