The Waschteufel (Wash devil)

This item is on display in our Heritage Centre on Pickwick Drive of Leamington, ON

Donor: Henry and Sally Froese Dyck

Jacob Peter and Johanna Schroeder Dyck purchased this item in 1930 at an auction sale from a Mr. Weiss in Harrow, ON. The Dyck family had come to Canada with two children in June of 1927. The family's first place of residence was on the Sandy Wilkinson farm on concession 5 where they suckered tobacco. Then the Dyck family moved to the Harrow Ansiedlung (settlement) along with other Mennonite families.

Clothing is put into a tub with soap and water; the plunger is worked up and down to wash the clothing. Daughter-in-law Sally later used this plunger to wash heavy articles such as rugs and quilts until the late 1930s. This is a German product, there are no known duplicates.
